That's a wrap
A quick-fire night then with a couple of surprises thrown in, mostly in TV.
Uzo Aduba started the evening by winning best female actor in a comedy series for her work in Orange is the New Black, which follows the Globes giving their equivalent to Gina Rodriguez.
After that William H Macy won for Shameless, Orange is the New Black bagged again for best comedy ensemble, Patricia Arquette won for supporting female actor and now looks nailed on for an Oscar.
Other winners were JK Simmons – whose speech was very, er, actory – while Mark Ruffalo was a welcome winner for his role in the AIDS drama the Normal Heart. Debbie Reynolds lifetime gong was fun, if not a bit confusing and Viola Davis’s speech was arguably the best of the night after she unexpectedly won best female actor in a drama series.
Kevin Spacey spoiled the HBO party and won best actor in drama (just as he did at the Globes), although they won with Frances McDormand in Olive Kitteridge and you can put your house on Julianne Moore for an Oscar after she won the best female actor in a leading role. The British turned up at the end bagging best drama ensemble with Dowton Abbey and Eddie Redmayne took a step closer to an Oscar by winning best actor.
Finally, the Oscar race for best picture looks like it’s swinging (flapping?) Birdman’s way after it took home the best ensemble cast award.
Phew! That’s it from us.
Costner is back and… well… that’s it.
Naomi Watts on the other hand is clearly very happy to be there. Zach Galifianakis takes the piss out of Julianne Moore’s “When I was on As the World Turns” moment, by saying the same thing and then walking off.
Ed Norton gets in the classic “age before beauty” line and gives the floor to Michael Keaton, who keeps it short and sweet.
That was rapid. Costner’s not moved that fast since he was catapulted over that wall in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves
And the winner is… Birdman
Kevin Costner is on now and they’re rushing through the best film nominations
Pretty different from her Golden Globes speech…
She starts with the classic line: “When I was on As the World Turns”… before talking about how working with other actors is what she loves doing most. Which is handy, really.
And the winner is… Julianne Moore. That looked a dead cert before the evening started
From the cheers coming from the other actors (and voters) I’d guess it’s going to be Julianne Moore.
Matthew McConaughey is on looking like a lumbersexual croupier to award the best female actor in a leading role
Just in case you thought my comments about Redmayne looking like a nailed on Oscar winner were a bit OTT, here’s one tweet that supports me with… some evidence (kind of).
Updated
He gave up science when he was 14 apparently, and is thanking Stephen Hawking for letting him portray his life despite that.
Updated
He’s being really gracious just like he was at the Golden Globes and mentioning Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Timothy Spall (Mr Turner) and David Oyelowo (Selma) - none of whom are nominated. He’s dedicating his win to all those who are living with ALS.
Updated
And the winner is… Eddie Redmayne AKA The bloke who’ll definitely win an Oscar
Here’s the full list - Steve Carell, Foxcatcher, Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game, Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler, Michael Keaton, Birdman and Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything
Julia Roberts is going off piste and opining about Mark Ruffalo - WHO ISN’T EVEN HERE! She introducing the best actor in a leading role btw.
Downton ensemble are on now being British and saying stuff like “This is the best bad boy/bad girl award ever”. They look genuinely ecstatic.
And the winner is… Downton Abbey or if you’re Rashida Jones, Down Abbey
Updated
The TV awards have been a little unexpected so far, so who knows they’ll probably give it to… Homeland. Imagine that.
This is the list: Boardwalk Empire (HBO), Downton Abbey (PBS), Game of Thrones (HBO), Homeland (Showtime) and House of Cards (Netflix)
Andy Samberg and Rashida Jones on now to award the TV ensemble prize and are easily being the most entertaining so far (sample “any actor worth a horse’s teet knows…”
We’re heading into the home straight now with the biggies still to come. The pace compared to almost any other awards show is ridiculous.
Some of the names include Mickey Rooney, Misty Upham, Richard Kiel, Lauren Bacall, Harold Ramis, Casey Kasem, Bob Hoskins, Sid Caesar, Russell Johnson, Ralph Waite, Richard Attenborough, Don Pardo, James Garner, Marcia Strassman, Ed Nelson, Meshach Taylor, Shirley Temple, Geoffrey Holder, Billie Whitelaw, Joan Rivers and Robin Williams
Liev Schreiber is on now remembering the actors who’ve died this year
She’s giving a moving speech about diversity in Hollywood now via an anecdote about her daughter: “When I tell my daughter story’s at night, number one I use my imagination. I always start with life and build from there, and she ‘says mummy can you put me in the story?”
Updated
And the winner is… Viola Davis. That’s big. ABC will be over the moon
Updated
Orange Is The New Black’s Laverne Cox is introducing the award for female actor in a drama series alongside Matt McCorry
The Boyhood cast now introducing their film and looking absolutely petrified while doing it
He’s not here though so we’re moving on without a pause for breath
And the winner is… Kevin “I just spoiled HBO’s party” Spacey, House of Cards
Here’s the list: Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire (HBO), Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones (HBO), Woody Harrelson, True Detective (HBO), Matthew McConaughey, True Detective (HBO), and Kevin Spacey, House of Cards (Netflix)
Best actor in a TV drama now. This should just be renamed the HBO category. The cable channel has four our of five noms.
Updated
Reynolds is on now. She’s talking about how Singing In The Rain was her favourite film now and Gene Kelly’s genius. She’s just saying that over and over. Fisher is hiding behind the award and shaking her head.
The cast of Modern Family don’t know whether to laugh or cry
Julianne Moore is crying her eyes out
We’re getting a tour through her career now. Singing In The Rain (she only had three months to learn how to dance), The Catered Affair (he first real dramatic role), Tammy The Bachelor (her song from it earned her a gold record) and her funny later roles (Family Guy cameo, etc). Carrie is doing the voiceover and it’s a nice heartfelt appreciation of her mum.

Some are finding her jokes about her dear old mum a bit pointed.

Others are cracking gags about Fisher’s glasses, and asking whether the autocue is in 3D.
Carrie Fisher just dropped a huge self-deprecating Ricky Gervais-style joke while talking about Reynold’s charity work with people in mental health: “She’s raised millions for mental health charities, and most of it has been spent on me!”. Awkward laughter follows.
Carrie Fisher is here now in some dodgy shades to give Debbie Reynolds her lifetime achievement award, and is cracking jokes apparently Debs used to be a decorator… ha!
Woah, it’s Carrie Fisher who’s about to announce the lifetime achievement award to her mother Debbie Reynolds. “She’s been an unsolicited stylist, interior decorator and marriage guidance counsellor.”

Next up it’s female actor in a TV movie or miniseries with JK “I’m an actor” Simmons and Viola Davis presenting
Then there’s a nice bit on Selma, which is pretty rich considering it wasn’t nominated… awkward
After a montage of films like Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, progress is shown by clips from Jane The Virgin, The Simpsons and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

SAG-AFTRA president Ken Howard is now on the stage demanding more applause for Mark Ruffalo and talking about the importance of the movies when it comes to portraying difficult subjects
He’s run off with it along with his incredibly large flower
It goes to Mark Ruffalo who is in the words of Jared Leto “a no show!”
Male actor in a series or mini series is up next
Debbie Reynolds has been spotted ahead of her award
That JK Simmons speech felt like it could have come straight from Inside The Actors’s studio
JK says that all actors are supporting actors as they’re all essential to the story and thanks “the 49 actors who appear onscreen in Whiplash.” He’s definitely an actor and it’s an actorly speech. He even met his wife on Broadway.
Strange burst of canned applause, “It wasn’t me!” says Reece. And it’s JK Simmons for Whiplash.
Hah! i do believe the #SAGAwards producers pushed the "sweeten applause" button a beat too soon. Way to pull back the curtain, guys -H

Reese Witherspoon is on to announce best male actor in a supporting role.
Orange Is The New Black is having a great night with two awards early on. But as well as standing out in the TV landscape for featuring a cast of diverse, well-written female characters, the show also had a knock-on effect in real prisons.
This is what we wrote about it back in July 2014:
Orange is the New Black might be an arch reference to fashion and life behind bars, but the influential Netflix series has now had an impact on what prisoners actually wear. Saginaw county jail in Michigan has banned the orange uniforms seen on the show because they have become, as the sheriff William Federspiel said to the Saginaw News, too “cool”. In fact, they’re so popular as a fashion item that Federspiel is concerned that prisoners doing projects in the community could be mistaken for civilians. Prisoners at Saginaw will now wear the more familiar black-and-white stripes worn by convicts in the US since the 19th century.”
Patricia Arquette is very emotional – she says she’s from a long line of actors so this award is particularly meaningful. Finishes off by thanking her mum: “You’re my hummingbird and you’re always with me.”

No surprise there, it’s a win for Patricia Arquette for Boyhood. That Oscar looks pretty much nailed-on.
Lupita Nyong’o was looking quite spectacular on the red carpet earlier ...

Colin Farrell’s bizarre moustache is spectacular in a different way. He’s presenting best female actor in a supporting role.
Instagram is full of SAG Awards red carpet pics with stars (and some other people) modelling high-end gear.
Julianne Moore
Matthew McConaghey
Amy Poehler
Jennifer Aniston
And Kelly Osbourne is there too
Ensemble in a comedy series goes to Orange is the New Black – already a great night for the show set in a women’s prison. And therefore for women actors.

He says “I’ve written so many great acceptance speeches that I never got to give ... but not tonight! To my fellow nominees ... ah, forget it. You lost!” Heh.
Best male actor in a comedy series is William H Macy for Shameless. He last won in 2003 for Door to Door.
The winner of the best female actor in a comedy series is Uzo Aduba, Orange is the New Black. She’s tearful and thrilled: “To be in a room with all your amazing talents is truly the greatest honour.” It’s a good start.
Omg I forgot how much I love the kinda corny but genuine "I'm an actor" introductions for the #SAGawards
— Àfzàl (@afzalALMIGHTY) January 26, 2015
The intro was, er, unusual and featured this terrible “joke”: “We’d go into the wood with Maryl Streep ...”
The SAG awards have compiled a list of all the booze that’s going to be consumed tonight. It looks like almost enough to give Oliver Reed a hangover. Compared to the Golden Globes, the SAG awards TV nominees are a lot more conservative. Networks like ABC do well (it has five nominationss), while HBO dominates in categories such as male actor where four out of the five (Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Peter Dinklage and Steve Buscemi) are on their roster and only Netflix’s Kevin Spacey stops a full house. Surprise Globe winners such as Jane The Virgin star Gina Rodriquez and Transparent are absent as well, with Netflix being the only streaming site recognised with nods for Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards.

We're watching the Screen Actors Guild awards
We’ve had the Golden Globes, which celebrated a smorgasbord of movies and TV shows, and the Oscar nominations, which were considerably less diverse. Tonight we’re watching the Screen Actors Guild awards, which, over a lean two host-free hours will be dishing out gongs to a succession of actors.
As this Time magazine article sets out, the Screen Actors Guild awards are relative newbies – they are staged by the actors’ union, voted for by a random panel of 2,200 people drawn from over 100,000 members, and, reckons Time, their “very reason for existence is to predict or subtly influence the Oscar race”. This means that we may get a better sense of who will win the Oscars categories that are still a bit up in the air – for instance best actor. Or then again, maybe not. Bradley Cooper hasn’t been nominated for a SAG, but with the controversial American Sniper going gangbusters at the US box office, could he be hoisting the gold statuette on the night?
If the Producers Guild awards, which happened on Saturday night, are anything to go by then Birdman is due to get the better of Boyhood on 22 February. It won best picture. Variety reports that the past seven winners of the gong have gone on to take the prize at the Oscars.
As we ponder those thoughts, here’s a picture of female actor in the leading role nominee Reese Witherspoon looking somewhat statuesque herself on the red carpet.
