The 1975's Matty Healy says band will only play festivals which have gender-balanced line-ups

Matty Healy has promised The 1975 will only perform at music festivals with gender-balanced line-ups.

The Northumberland-born frontman was responding to music journalist Laura Snapes' tweet, which challenged major male artists to use their leverage and only agree to perform at festivals if women and non-binary acts are given better representation.

The Guardian's deputy music editor had criticised Leeds and Reading Festivals for having a male-dominated line-up.

In a reply to Healy, Ms Snapes wrote: "Do it MH, add a condition to your rider that says you’ll only play festivals that commit to X% (ideally 50%!) acts that include women and non binary performers."

Healy responded: "Take this as me signing this contract - I have agreed to some festivals already that may not adhere to this and I would never let fans down who already have tickets. But from now I will and believe this is how male artist can be true allies."

In another tweet, the singer said: "Reading and Leeds with more women would be honestly the best festival in the world that place is vibey. Let's not judge people and give the benefit of the doubt that people are going to start to listening. I can feel the change!"

On Wednesday, The 1975 won an NME Award for best band and innovation.

They are set to perform at Newcastle Arena on Sunday February 16.

It will be a hometown show for the Newcastle United-supporting frontman who grew up in Northumberland before moving to Manchester.

His parents are actors Denice Welch and Tim Healy.

On Sunday, the 1975 will be supported by beabadoobee. She is a singer-songwriter from London and will join The 1975 for their entire tour.
