The 1975 front man kisses male fan in Dubai in defiance of anti-LGBTQ laws

The 1975 lead vocalist Matt Healy defied Dubai's anti-LGBTQ laws by kissing another man.

The fan asked Matt to marry him when he came down from the stage, before Matt hugged him and planted a kiss on him. This happened during a performance of the band's 2016 track Love Someone.

Dubai has strict laws against homosexuality - it is a crime punishable by up to 10 years behind bars.

Taking to Twitter after the show, Matt expressed no regrets, writing: "Thank you Dubai you were so amazing. I don't think we'll be allowed back due to my 'behaviour' but know that I love you and that I wouldn't have done anything differently given the chance again".

He went on to add: "But who knows maybe they will let me back in let's just wait and see".

The 1975 have never made a secret of their attitudes as LGBTQ rights advocates. Last year, the band donated money to help create London's first LGBTQ+ Community Centre.

Healy said of the band's donation at the time: "I am a bit wary of talking about it because I don't want to appear to be virtue-signalling, but me and the others in the band felt it was obviously a good thing to put our money towards".

He told The Observer: "You might wonder why it is needed, and even ask yourself what exactly everyone is still scared of, but sadly, I think stigma still exists and we still have some way to go."

The 1975 will headline both Leeds and Reading Festivals next week. The band are no strangers to socially-conscious credentials, featuring 16 year old climate change activist Greta Thunberg on their album, Notes on a Conditional Form. The album is out next February.

Dubai is known for its harsh anti-LGBTQ laws. The Foreign Office reports that there have been incidents of public punishment for homosexual activity in the UAE, especially where there is a crowd involved.
