The 1975 face backlash after divisive Glastonbury headline set sparks crowd exodus

The 1975 appear to be taking the backlash in their stride after delivering a divisive headline set on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage on Friday night — a performance that sparked a noticeable exodus from the crowd and was marred by technical issues for viewers watching at home.

Matty Healy and his band stepped into the coveted top slot at Worthy Farm, but not all festival-goers were impressed. Many were seen walking away mid-set in search of other acts, with some saying the band simply “wasn’t their vibe.”

A source told The Mirror the audience in front of the main stage was “surprisingly sparse” compared to the packed crowds that turned out earlier in the day for performances by CMAT and Lewis Capaldi. “Some people clearly weren’t feeling it and decided to head elsewhere,” the source said.

The performance quickly drew criticism online, with fans voicing their opinions on X. “Putting The 1975 as headliner at Glastonbury is a bit like putting a Custard Cream as the centrepiece of a fine dining experience,” one viewer wrote.

Another added: “Just don’t get the appeal of The 1975. Bland songs sung by a guy pretending to be drunk. Not Pyramid headline material.”

But it wasn’t all negative. Some fans hailed the set as one of the band’s best. “The 1975 at #Glastonbury has to go down as one of the greatest sets of all time. No debate,” one user wrote, while another praised the band’s energy: “The 1975 set list tonight has been INSANE, if you are at #Glastonbury tonight I hope you're appreciating this.”

To make matters more frustrating for fans, those tuning in from home via BBC iPlayer faced technical issues throughout the live broadcast. At one point, an error message was displayed on screen, prompting confusion and annoyance online.

“The 1975 keeps dropping right?” one viewer tweeted. Another joked: “Really enjoying watching Error Code 04105 on iPlayer,” while a third quipped: “Would be good if the stream wasn't cutting out constantly aye.”

Despite the glitches and criticism, the band have stayed silent on the backlash. Instead, The 1975 shared behind-the-scenes snaps and performance photos on their Instagram Story — offering no comment on the mixed response or iPlayer disruption.

Known for their genre-spanning sound and frontman Healy’s often unpredictable stage antics, The 1975 have long split opinion — and their Glastonbury debut was no exception.

Friday’s performance marks a major milestone for the band, who formed in Manchester in the early 2000s and have since built a global fan base.
