The £180 trainers that saw huge queues outside Leeds shop - despite social distancing warning

Dozens of people queued up for hours outside a shop in Leeds city centre on Saturday morning to get their hands on a limited edition pair of £180 Adidas trainers.

The Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Cinder shoes are a new release from Adidas, with trainer fans eagerly anticipating the release date of Saturday, March 21 at selected stores across the country.

The Hip Store on Vicar Lane, Leeds city centre, was picked as one of the UK shops to sell the trainers and people who wanted to buy them were encouraged to enter a raffle. Successful applicants then got their tickets on a first-come-first-served basis.

However, the queues of people outside the store on Saturday morning have been criticised for not following the rules on social distancing.

The picture above shows a crowd of people stood incredibly close to one another outside the doors to the shop shortly before it opened at 9am.

It is likely that many of them would have been waiting there for several hours to be at the front of the queue.

The picture was taken less than 24 hours after the government issued an immediate closure on all pubs and restaurants to reduce the likelihood of large crowds gathering.

Although shops have not yet been added to that list, social distancing guidelines suggest that people should stay at least two metres away from one another, particularly in public places.
