The 16 Leeds areas where Covid-19 rates are still much higher than they should be - with one hotspot worst in England

There are 16 parts of Leeds where coronavirus infection rates are still a cause for concern - including an area that now has the highest rate in England.

With the UK now almost eight weeks into lockdown 3, we are beginning to see signs of recovery with Covid-19 infection rates much lower than they were at the start of 2021.

And while some areas have almost eradicated coronavirus altogether, there are other parts of the county where rates are concerningly way above the national average.

In data supplied by PHE, the rates of each area in Leeds is displayed by way of an interactive colour map.

Seven–day rates are expressed per 100,000 population and are calculated by dividing the seven day count by the area population and multiplying by 100,000.

Areas that are suppressed, which means there were less than three Covid cases recorded over a seven-day period, are coloured in white, but more problematic areas are coloured in blue and purple.

Wetherby East & Thorp Arch has, by far the highest rolling rate in England with a rolling rate of 1,280.4 and 90 new cases from the seven days leading up to February 24.

The sharp rise in cases is attributed to a recent outbreak at HMP Wealstun, and councillors have reassured residents that if the prison outbreak is taken out of the equation, numbers for the rest of the ward remain low.

Wetherby is one of two "purple" Covid hotspots in Leeds:

  • Wetherby and Thorp Arch - 1,280.4 (90 new cases)
  • Belle Isle North - 480.1 (29)

Belle Isle North is one of the worst affected areas in the country.

There are a number of other "dark blue" areas where the infection rate is above England's average - 102.9 cases per 100,000 people. They are:

  • Leeds Dock, Hunslet & Stourton - 356.5 (30)
  • Armley & New Wortley - 306.5 (27)
