The 150-year-old mansion at risk of collapsing into a pile of rubble

A dilapidated 150-year-old mansion has been named one of the most endangered buildings in the country by conservationists.

Each year, the Victorian Society releases a list of the ten Victorian and Edwardian buildings most at risk of ruin in England and Wales.

The campaign aims to expose the plight of publicly nominated buildings in the hope that increased awareness and appreciation will help to save them.

Among this year's list is the historic Horncliffe Mansion in Edenfield, near Bury.

The landmark building was originally constructed by mill owner Henry Hardman in 1869, but has been empty since 2009.

It was previously used as a care home, hotel and a wedding venue.

But after lying neglected for more than a decade, the landmark building was hit by a devastating fire in August 2019.

Drone photos published by LancsLive last summer revealed the state of decay at Horncliffe Mansion, which is in Bury Road.

A completely burnt-out interior, with barely anything left of the upper levels can be seen on the images.

The roof, flooring and windows have all been destroyed, just leaving a shell of an exterior.

Griff Rhys Jones, VS President, said: “This year’s Top Ten Finalists all desperately need our attention.

“We have to find new funding, badly needed repair works, and protection from demolition, or new owners.

“Many have highlighted their needs. Many more are needed to help.

“ Like so much conservation, the issue is not the past, but the future.

“Can we keep these testaments alive for our great, great grandchildren as part of their own story?”
