The 15 players definitely leaving Cardiff Blues this summer and the one they're fighting to keep

Cardiff Blues have revealed the full list of players leaving the region...but, tellingly, it doesn’t include Nick Williams.

In all, 15 players are either moving to new teams, retiring or being released.

A number of them were already known about.

The Gareth Anscombe saga concluded with him signing for the Ospreys, while Wales squad prop Rhys Carre is heading for Saracens.

Utility back Steve Shingler is on his way to Ealing Trailfinders, via a spell in France, centre Jack Roberts is off to Doncaster and winger Tom Williams is Jersey-bound.

In addition, Lions front row forwards Gethin Jenkins and Matthew Rees have hung up their boots, with both having already moved into coaching.

And it was announced on Wednesday that USA captain Blaine Scully was leaving a year ahead of the end of his contract.

Now a further group of players have been confirmed as departing.

They include South African lock George Earle, who has signed for French club Colomiers, and scrum-half Dane Blacker, who is set to join the Scarlets.

In addition, flanker Sion Bennett, utility back Ben Jones, centre Cameron Lewis and young wings Corey Howells and George Thomas have all been released.

Bennett made 18 appearances after arriving from Northampton in 2017, while Jones, who can play at fly-half or full-back, had six outings.

Howells, who had switched from the Dragons, played two games, while Lewis and Thomas didn’t appear for the first-team.

It’s notable that Nick Williams’ name doesn’t appear on the departing roster, which suggests the Blues still remain hopeful of retaining him.

The talismanic No 8 wants to stay on for another year and the region want to keep him.

But the contracting of overseas players has to be approved by the WRU and that approval has not been granted so far.

It’s understood the Union are concerned over the re-signing of the 35-year-old Kiwi on the grounds it could be blocking the path for a home-grown player.

An appeal by the Blues against the decision was rejected.

However, they are still fighting their case and hoping for a change of heart on the part of the powers-that-be.

Another name that doesn’t feature on the leaving list is Welsh international prop Rhys Gill.

It’s understood he has agreed a contract extension, which will be welcome news with fellow loosehead Carre moving to England.

While 15 players are leaving the squad, only two signings have been announced so far - Wales back three duo Josh Adams and Hallam Amos.

The departures were revealed at last night’s annual dinner where the end of season awards were handed out.

New Wales squad member Owen Lane picked up the Peter Thomas Player of the Season prize, while the Players’ Player of the Season was Olly Robinson.

The Discovery of the Season award went to winger Jason Harries, with centre Ben Thomas named Academy Player of the Season.

Matthew Morgan’s memorable effort against Saracens in the Champions Cup was chosen as Try of the Season, while the Special Recoginition Award went to Gethin Jenkins.

Commenting on the main prize going to winger Lane, coach John Mulvihill said: “Owen has made his presence felt in every game this season and has produced some big moments in key games.

“Earlier in the season we spoke to him and told him he needed to back himself more and he has taken that on board and barely looked back as he’s taken his game to the next level.

“He has had an outstanding season and is still a young man with a very big future ahead of him.

“We wish him all the best as he begins preparations for the World Cup.”

On Players’ Player Robinson, he added: “Olly has been one of our most consistent players and is the ultimate professional.

“He has superbly filled the boots of Ellis Jenkins and Josh Navidi and continually produced big performances

“To receive this accolade from his fellow players is thoroughly deserved.”
