The 14 Tyneside postcodes where Covid cases are now falling

Covid cases are falling in over a dozen Tyneside postcodes.

The areas are largely in Newcastle and North Tyneside, where cases have slowed significantly in recent weeks.

That's sparked hope the latest Covid wave to hit the region may be peaking, although one expert told ChronicleLive that it was "too soon" to tell.

Overall cases are still rising across every council area. However for the first time in weeks, multiple postcodes are now seeing a week-on-week reduction in cases.

Some of these declines are minimal, such as in Preston Grange, where cases fell by just 2.3%. However, North Jesmond's rate has dipped by 52.4% in the past week.

Eugene Milne, Director of Public Health for Newcastle, said the decline in some parts of the North East could be due to students leaving for the summer.

Yet while cases in places like Heaton and Jesmond are falling, the are also diminishing in some coastal parts of North Tyneside, as well as estates such as Chirton.

Besides Tyneside, a handful of other North East postcodes have seen a slight drop in new cases this week.

These include Stanley North and East, as well as Washington Town Centre and Biddick. The latter has suffered an explosion in new cases, although that's now eased.

However case numbers are still sky-high across the region. In South Tyneside, which has the highest infection rate in England, around one in every 70 people are currently infected.

And the pressures of this latest wave are now, worryingly, starting to show in the NHS. Some planned operations in Newcastle are now being cancelled at the city's hospitals after Covid admissions almost doubled in a week.

These are the 14 postcodes in Newcastle, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside where Covid cases are currently declining.
