Covid Scotland: The 12 countries at red list risk as cases around Europe spike

UK travellers have been issued a warning after countries in Europe are seeing another dramatic spike in Covid-19 cases.

Restrictions and lockdowns have been put in force and several countries could be added back onto the Red list-which currently has no countries on it.

The traffic light system was shaken up and Scotland and the rest of the UK now only have two categories- a red list and a non-red list. However at the start of November, the remaining red list countries were removed from the red list.

The Scottish government warned that if cases began to rise again, countries can be added to the red list rapidly and the red list rules remain the same.

Austria has plunged back into a lockdown from today (Monday November 22) and the government has also said coronavirus jabs will be made mandatory from February 1, as only 66 per cent of the population have been vaccinated so far.

Now, UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has warned that the government would be "prepared to add countries and territories back if needed".

Data analyst Tim White has been following case figures in destinations around the world since the traffic light system began and has now named 12 countries which could themselves back on the UK's red list soon.

He highlighted record case rates in Norway , which saw an all-time high in last week's seven-day rolling average, the Independent reports.

Austria, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands and Slovakia are also seeing a spike in infections with seven-day averages at an all-time high in all six.

And Belgium is also seeing a surge, with over 12,000 news cases in the 24 hours to Wednesday, while the Czech Republic’s daily cases have risen by 50 per cent compared to a week ago and Finland’s have risen 21 per cent.

A rise in covid cases is been seen the USA which only started allowing fully vaccinated travellers back into the country earlier in November.

The 12 countries at risk are:

  • Croatia
  • Finland
  • Czech Republic
  • Belgium
  • Slovakia
  • Netherlands
  • Iceland
  • Germany
  • Denmark
  • Austria
  • Norway
  • USA
