Eleven UK cities are about to lose their local Morrisons at the cost of 900 jobs as the supermarket looks to stem losses.

A Morrisons spokesman confirmed the 11 stores as follows:

• West Bromwich (Hawthorns), West Midlands

• Salford, Greater Manchester

• Burnham on Sea, Somerset

• Castletown, Sunderland

• Clevedon, Somerset

• Little Hulton, Greater Manchester

• Northallerton, North Yorkshire

• Oldbury, West Midlands

• Shildon, County Durham

• Streatham, London

• Tyldesley, Wigan

David Potts, chief executive of the chain, said the stores had become "part of the problem rather than the solution".

Morrisons also said that it was selling all of its M Local convenience stores at a loss of £30m.

Earlier this year, Morrisons shut 10 supermarkets at a loss of 430 jobs, while Potts cut the size of the chain’s head office by 720 jobs.

In a statement, Morrisons said the closures were unavoidable but that it would try to find new jobs for those affected. “We have looked extremely carefully at whether the stores can be turned around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making them viable. We will be discussing how to reduce redundancies and redeploy colleagues around our business,” a spokesman said.
