The £10m transfer mistake Arsenal made that left Unai Emery with a big problem

Arsenal have had problems in defence for a number of years now.

And while they signed David Luiz and Kieran Tierney in the summer, with William Saliba joining in the long-term but going back to Saint Etienne on a season-long loan deal, the problems remained for Unai Emery right up until his sacking.

That could be down to Emery's tactics, with the Gunners offering up more shots on their goal than the side are managing themselves this season.

But it could also be down to decisions that were made before Emery arrived at the club.

And Arsenal legend Martin Keown pointed to one in particular that looks to have been a mistake.

The summer before Emery arrived at the Emirates - Arsene Wenger's final season at the helm - the Gunners sold a defender for a sum of around £10million.

Gabriel Paulista did not exactly have a good time of it in north London, making 46 Premier League appearances in two-and-a-half years at the club.

The defender has played 72 La Liga games for Valencia since his summer 2017 move, helping them into the Champions League for two consecutive seasons.

And he impressed during the draw with Chelsea at the Mestalla on Wednesday night, leading Keown to suggest the Gunners should never have let him go.

Speaking on BT Sport, he said: "I’d have kept him, put it that way. I thought he was better than what they had already."
