The £100million warchest needed to help Rafa Benitez turn Newcastle United into a top-eight side

The international break is almost at end, with Newcastle United preparing to take on Arsenal on Monday night.

But a lack of action on the pitch hasn't meant it's all been quiet at St James' Park over the last fornight.

Rafa Benitez's future on Tyneside remains the hot topic of conversation - and if he does stay, what will his summer transfer budget be?

Lee Ryder was on hand to answer your burning questions on all things black-and-white in our daily live blog.

Here's what you asked - and Lee's answers.

If Rafa Benitez stays what sort of transfer budget will he have this summer?

Newcastle have already been talking about spending up to £40m on striker Joelinton behind the scenes. Any type of deal like that can’t be dismissed as the Magpies should be enjoying the benefits of the TV money from the last few years by now.

Benitez could arguably expect up to £100million to spend but there’s no guarantee of that the way things have been in recent times.

Who do you think would be valued the most in the Newcastle squad and do you think that the surge in value that player Rafa has bought proves how well he’s actually doing?

If I’m being honest, top Premier League clubs are rightly taking an interest in Sean Longstaff after his flying start.

He ticks a lot of boxes, young, up and coming and has a great sell-on value.

Obviously, the last thing Newcastle should be doing is selling him, but a new, improved contract could be important for him.

What will happen with goalkeeper situation if Rafa stays?

If Rafa stays I think we can expect to see another keeper coming in the summer as back-up.

There are question marks over all three of the other stoppers.

Karl Darlow has not signed a new deal yet, Rob Elliot was available for transfer in January, and Freddie Woodman has a year left on his current contract.

It all points to somebody else coming in as United will surely look to make funds available by moving somebody else on.

How are Newcastle going to approach the last games of this season?

I wouldn’t expect Newcastle to go gung-ho against Arsenal as they will play a counter-attacking system for obvious reasons.

But in the home games I do feel they will go for it a bit more.

If they can get three or four more points on the board you will see a difference in how they play.

When will Rafa's contract talk start?

The truth is that talks have unofficially started already in some ways with pre-season planning and names of targets.

But the big showdown is yet to come. That’ll be when Rafa and the board talk about money to spend and the ambition of Mike Ashley.

Are Newcastle looking at alternatives to Rafa?

They haven’t so far because they still want to keep Benitez. But other agents have approached United with some interesting names.

This would still be a popular job for somebody else, but Rafa Benitez staying makes the most sense - in fact it’s a no-brainer.

Can we expect a Mike Ashley update?

In some ways there already have been some off-the-record updates - such as the end of Peter Kenyon and Garry Cook’s interest in buying the club.

The line coming out of St James’ Park right now is that bidding parties must prove they are for real before getting deep into the legal framework.

The accounts are due in at Companies House by 31/03/2019. Can we expect them on time and what are we roughly expecting them to show?

They weren’t on time last year and Newcastle were keen to paint a positive picture on them.

They should surely be in a good state this time around and Benitez will be expecting money to spend.
