The £100m Newcastle United decision which could help Sunderland

Sunderland could stand to benefit from a decision made by rivals Newcastle United and their fellow Premier League sides over a rollover of the current domestic rights TV deal.

A three-year extension to the current £5bn deal with Amazon, BT Sport, and Sky Sports has been approved by top-flight clubs, according to the Financial Times.

Consultation was required with the Government due to the private nature of the deal, and the same report claims one stipulation for the deal was an extra £100m being paid each season in solidarity to the lower leagues.

Given the ongoing financial ramifications posed by the Covid-19 pandemic to all levels of football, this will likely be a financial boost welcomed at Sunderland.

No comment has been given yet by the Premier League, but the Press Association understands an announcement could be made as soon as Thursday.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters estimated in March that the clubs would have lost nearly £2billion collectively by the end of this season as a consequence of the pandemic.

The first five of the seven packages in the current three-year deal were announced in February 2018, with the final two confirmed in June of that year.

The broadcasters shared 200 matches between them when stadiums were open as usual, with Sky broadcasting 128, BT 52 and Amazon 20.
