The 10 worst Chelsea transfers over the last 10 years ranked

Chelsea have had some wonderful players over the years.

Frank Lampard and John Terry will go down as club legends, while the likes of Dider Drogba, Arjen Robben and Diego Costa will hold a special place in most Blues' fans hearts.

But what about those players who have failed to live up to expectations, the players who have totally flopped at Stamford Bridge?

There have been plenty of those too.

For every Drogba there has been a Juan Cuadrado.

Here we take a look at the biggest duds in the past decade of Stamford Bridge transfers.

10. Marko Marin

The midfielder was signed from Werder Bremen in 2012, but failed to make an impact at Chelsea.

The now 30-year-old made just 16 first team appearances for the Blues, before being sent out on numerous loan deals.

The German international left Stamford Bridge in 2016, signing for Greek side Olympiacos.

9. Wallace Oliveira

Oliveira was a 2012 signing by Chelsea, although he didn't make a single appearance for the Blues. The Brazilian had a number of unsuccessful loan moves over his time at Stamford Bridge.

He failed to make an impact at Inter Milan, Carpi, Vitesse and Gremio. The 25-year-old was released by Chelsea last summer, and is currently searching for a new club after being released by Brazilian club Figueirense in April.

8. Radamel Falcao

Chelsea signed the Colombia striker on loan for the 2015/16 season, after he had a disappointing previous campaign on loan at Manchester United.

Blues fans would have been hoping that he fared better at Stamford Bridge, however, that was not the case, with the striker making just 12 appearances throughout the season, scoring just once, in the 1-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace.

Much of his Chelsea career was hampered by a groin injury, but the fact that Chelsea decided not to take up an option to make the deal a permanent one tells much of the story.

7. Papy Djilobodji

The Senegalese defender was signed by Chelsea in 2015 for a reported £4m from Nantes, however he didn't last long at Stamford Bridge.

Djilobodji made just one appearance for the club, a one minute cameo in a League Cup win over Walsall in September 2015.

A loan move to Werder Bremen followed, before the defender was sold to Sunderland  where he was released in 2018. He now plays his football for Chinese Super League club Gazisehir.

6. Alvaro Morata

Chelsea broke their transfer record in 2017 to bring in Morata from Real Madrid for a fee of £60m, but the striker failed to properly settle at Stamford Bridge.

Morata scored 11 goals in 31 appearances in his first Premier League season, but was in and out of the team for the first part of 2018/19, eventually signing on loan at Atletico Madrid.

That loan deal became permanent this summer, and Morata has since openly admitted how he didn't enjoy his short time at Stamford bridge.

5. Yossi Benayoun

Another arrival from Liverpool who turned out to be less than successful at Stamford Bridge. Benayoun joined Chelsea from the Reds in 2010, signing a three-year deal.

The winger made a total of 24 appearances for the Blues, registering just one goal and two assists, either side of a loan deal with Arsenal in 2011.

Banayoun spent the first part of the 2012/13 season on loan at West Ham United, before being released by Chelsea in the summer of 2013.

4. Juan Cuadrado

Cuadrado was signed by Chelsea in January 2015 £23.3m, the deal also saw then Blues forward Mo Salah go on loan to Fiorentina.

Despite the fee, Cuadrado never made a big impact in his six months at Stamford Bridge, scoring no goals and providing one assist in his 15 appearances for the Blues.

The winger was sent on loan to Juventus the 2015/16 and 16/17 season, before the deal became permanent in the summer of 2017 for £17m.

3. Danny Drinkwater

Danny Drinkwater was another deadline day signing that hasn't gone quite to plan.

The former Premier League winner arrived from Leicester City in 2017, for a fee in the region of £35m. However, the player has gone onto make just 23 appearances for the club since.

He didn't play a single minute of Premier League football under Maurizio Sarri last season, his only appearance coming in the Commmunity Shield.

Drinkwater was sent on loan to Burnley for the 2019/20 campaign but is yet to make a league appearance for the Clarets, and is due to hold talks with Sean Dyche after being involved in a recent attack outside a nightclub.

2. Tiemoue Bakayoko

Chelsea completed the signing of Bakayoko from Monaco in 2017, for a deal worth £40m.

But the midfielder failed to impress during his 43 games for the club, earning criticism from fans and pundits for his performances in a Chelsea shirt.

The Frenchman played for just one season for the Blues before being sent out on loan to AC Milan. He is now back on loan at his former club Monaco, and is due back at Stamford Bridge in 2020.

1. Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres to Chelsea was one of the deals that now is synonymous with deadline day.

The Blues paid Liverpool £50m for the striker in January 2011, a fee which was a British transfer record. Torres had an impressive goal scoring record for the Reds, but that changed when he arrived at Stamford Bridge.

He scored 45 goals in 172 appearances for Chelsea, with a total of eight Premier League goals being his best return in a single season (2012/13).

Although fans are likely to remember his crucial goal against Barcelona in the semi-final of the Champions League in 2012.

Torres has recently announced his retirement from football.
