The 10 things M.E.N readers think the North does better than the South

It's a debate that gets everybody talking, especially in Greater Manchester - which is better, the North or the South?

Here at the M.E.N , we think we know the answer.

We asked our readers to get involved in the debate and explain why it's actually not so grim up North.

We asked you to tell us one thing you believe the North does better than the South on our Facebook page.

More than a thousand people responded, and some of the answers were brilliant.

Here are 10 things that came up the most...

1. Gravy

Vicki Greehall listed off four things that make the North more superior.

"People skills, considerate driving, friendliness and GRAVY", she said.

And our beloved gravy popped up more than once in the suggestions, especially paired with chips.

George East, a refugee from the south now living in Buxton, listed everyone's favourite northern foodstuff in his comment.

"People, friendliness, chips, beer, humour, easy-goingness, house prices, scenery, cost of living, and gravy", he said.

2. Chippy teas

Being able to get a good chippy tea up North was another favourite with our readers.

"Chippys, all day. Terrible down South!", Louise Fitzgerald said.

3. Not moaning about the weather

Adelle Pepper said that people in the North are 'hardcore' when it comes to the weather.

"We don't go running for our coats in rain", she commented.

"We're hardcore up here and say to the weather gods bring it on."

Laura Edge agreed and wrote: "The North are not scared to go out in really bad weather."

4. The views

People love the views up North, like this one of Tandle Hill in Oldham (Oldham Advertiser)

Matthew Owen said the views up North are better.

And we definitely agree.

5. The people are more friendly

Our personality was also a common answer, with lots of readers saying that the people up North are much more friendly than those down South.

"Northerners are more friendly, I can say that I'm a Southerner living up North!", Karen Makin said.

"Wouldn't go back down South to live now, I've lived up North for almost six years."

Emma Lou wrote: "Moved from the South, definitely friendlier."

Charles Forbes added: "Simply everything but mainly humanity, friendliness and simple people skills."

6. Sense of humour

Northerner's sense of humour and good manners were also a popular choice.

"Friendly, a good sense of humour, considerate to others, we have much better manners", Paula Hudson wrote.

Claire Cordingley agreed, writing: "We have a better sense of humour!"

7. The music

Sarah Lyons said the music up North is better than in the South, both live music and recorded.

Debbie Dawson also said the music was superior, quoting the Beatles and Oasis as two examples.

8. Brews

Northerners also know how to make a good brew, according to our readers.

Jade Rose said: "Better brews, southern brews are just water and milk."

9. Cheap pints

Great value beer is easy to find up North, especially when you keep out of city centres and stick to the suburbs.

Steve Docker said the prices in pubs were much cheaper up North than down South.

George Cisar agreed and said the best thing about living up North was being able to get a 'really good pint'.

10. EVERYTHING

Finally, Ryan Marsden had a short but sweet answer to our question.

"There's only one thing we do better then the south.... EVERYTHING."
