The places in Glasgow only Glaswegians know how to pronounce

You have to feel sorry for some of the visitors in our city when they're faced with getting in a taxi and asking to go to Saw-chee-hawl Street.

And that famous city centre address isn't the only 'tongue-twister' for Glasgow first-timers.

Ever been to Polmadie, Ruchazie or all the way to Auchenshoogle? Who knows, even if you've lived here your whole life you might have been getting it wrong all this time.

And we put out the question to our readers, asking which are the hardest neighbourhood or street names to pronounce?

Here's the absolute belters you came back with:

Sauchiehall Street

Shoppers on one of Glasgow's most difficult-to-pronounce streets (Toni Nicoletti/Glasgow Live)

One of Glasgow's most prominent shopping streets, we've all heard it pronounced as 'Saw-chee-hall Street' from those not regularly on our patch.

Auchenshoogle

Firstly, what a great name. But this east end area can bring some controversial pronunciations, 'Aw-chen-shoe-gal', being one of the most common (and entertaining).

Milngavie

Yes, the beautiful north Glasgow spot and leafy suburb of 'Millen-gavvy'.

Buccleuch St

Found in the heart of Garnethill, I must admit, this is one we struggle with - 'Buck-lew Street', right?

Lambhill

Another North Glasgow name, Lambhill, popped up in your responses a few times - are people getting a little continental and pronouncing it 'La Mill'?

Bridgeton

Bridgeton? Surely, 'Bridge-ton'? Nope. If you're from around there, you'll know it's clearly 'Brig-ton'. Easy for anyone to understand ...

Hogganfield Loch

Apparently the Commonwealth Games commentators couldn't get their heads around this one. For avoidance of doubt, it's 'Huggan-field', not 'Hoggan-field'.

Ruchazie

It's claimed the correct way to pronounce this north east number - interestingly found right beside the above Hoggandfield Loch - is 'rukh-HAY-zee'. So put your Ru-ch-ay-sees away.

Polmadie

"Paul, ya maddy!' (Geograph)

Pol-mad-ee? Or Pole-ma-dee? This one often causes debate, with some allegedly even using the phrase: "See Paul? He's a maddy!" to help them get by ... whatever works for you, Glasgow!

Crossmyloof

This southside gem always causes an issue, but you're not crossing just anyone's loof, it's "Cross-MA-loof!" Simple ...

And, we may as well throw another very important name into the mix as well - Glasgow is NOT Glass-gow (as in cow!).

But we're sure you'll let people know that.
