The 10 best Celtic January transfers as striker special touch offers good omen for Ange

Ange Postecoglou will be looking to strengthen his squad during the January transfer window and although it's notoriously difficult time to sign good quality players it hasn't stopped Celtic in the past.

Tomoki Iwata, Alistair Johnston and Yuki Kobayashi have already signed for the league champions, but the Aussie gaffer has hinted on a number of occasions that more could be heading to the east end of Glasgow before the window slams shut at the end of the month. Speaking last month Postecoglou said if a player becomes available then "we will move on it". He added: "We will see what January brings. My view on these things is that, if a good opportunity comes up that will make us stronger, and it makes sense for us, then we will move on it."

Many managers bemoan the winter window, however there can be bargains to be had and that has proved to be the case for Celtic in the past. Whether it is players looking to reignite their careers, such as Robbie Keane, or those who are taking the step up to the next level like Barry Robson the January window has seen it all.

Here Record Sport takes a look at some of the more memorable signing to arrive in the east end of Glasgow in the winter windows gone by.

Kris Commons

Signed from Derby County in January 2011 Kris Commons went on to win eight domestic trophies during his six-and-a-half years at Celtic Park. His wand of a left foot saw him bag double figures goal tallies in four season while playing under Neil Lennon, Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers.

Throughout his time in Glasgow Commons managed to bag 91 goals in 218 appearances. He eventually fell out of favour when Rodgers headed north and was loaned to Hibs during the 2016/17 season.

Barry Robson

The Inverurie native signed from Dundee United in the January 2008 window and hit the ground running straight away after scoring against Barcelona in the Champions League tie at Parkhead. He developed a productive relationship with Paul Hartley in the centre of midfield throughout his career in the east end of Glasgow.

During his time at Celtic he lifted the league title in 2008 and the League Cup in 2009. After a two-year spell at Celtic Tony Mowbray decided to sell him to Middlesbrough where he again spent two years and joined up with his former manager Gordon Strachan.

Robbie Keane

The Irishman joined Celtic on a six-month loan from Tottenham Hotspurs in 2010 on the last day of the window. Thousands of Celtic supporters gathered outside the ground to see him sign just after midnight. Although the spell at Parkhead wasn't successful in terms of trophies he was still able to bag 16 goals in six months for the Hoops.

Keane eventually left Spurs and headed to Los Angeles to play for LA Galaxy alongside David Beckham.

Leigh Griffiths

The striker signed for Celtic on the last day of the January 2014 window from Wolverhampton Wanderers. During his time at Parkhead he made 261 appearances scoring 123 goals. While he was able to lift the league seven times, the League Cup five times and the Scottish Cup on four occasions.

Griffiths was loaned to Dundee during his final season at Celtic with manager Ange Postecoglou announcing he would not re-sign the striker.

Daizan Maeda

The Japanese star may only be a year into his Celtic career but he has been a brilliant signing for Ange Postecoglou. Maeda initially arrived at Celtic Park on a loan in January 2022 from Yokohama Marinos, however the Aussie manager had the option to buy him in the summer.

Maeda may not bag as many goals as Kyogo Furuhashi, but his energy levels are second to none in the current Celtic team. His tenacity has endeared him to the Celtic fans and has led him to be scouted by English Premier League clubs in the January window.

Craig Bellamy

Martin O'Neil signed the Welsh striker on deadline day on January 2005 in what was seen as a transfer coup for the Glasgow club. Bellamy had fallen out of favour at Newcastle United so then manager Graeme Souness sent him out on loan to Scotland.

Bellamy was unable to stop Rangers lifting the league title that season but he did get his hands on his first trophy as a professional when he won the Scottish Cup.

Georgios Samaras

The Greek striker initially signed on loan from Manchester City in January 2008, however a successful spell earned him a permanent deal in July of that year. Although Samaras wasn't a consistent scorer he still managed to hit double figures a couple of times during the seven seasons he was in Glasgow.

Celtic fans had a love/hate relationship with Samaras due to his inconsistency in front of goal, however he was still able to secure seven trophies during his time in Scotland.

Stephen Pearson

The Motherwell star arrived at Celtic Park in the January 2004 window. His time at Parkhead was hit and miss, however in his first season he won the young player of the year award. Pearson was able to win five trophies during his three years at the club, including the Scottish Cup in 2004.

He eventually left to play in England for Derby County with Celtic reportedly making a profit of around £400,000 on his transfer.

Mikael Lustig

The Swedish defender arrived at Celtic on January 1, 2012, however he had to wait a couple of months to make his debut against Aberdeen in a 1-1 at Pittodrie. It took Lustig a bit of time to win the Celtic fans round as he had to play second fiddle to Adam Matthews and Emilio Izaguirre in the early stages of his career in Glasgow.

When Brendan Rodger arrived at Celtic he became a mainstay and was one of the first names on the team sheet for the Northern Irishman. Lustig picked up 16 trophies while playing in Scotland.

Ki Sung-yueng

The South Korean proved to be a fans favourite during his his two-and-a-half years at Celtic. Ki arrived in Glasgow for around £2.1million from FC Seoul in 2010 and through his time made 85 appearances, scoring on 11 occasions.

His finest moment in a Hoops' shirt was his display against Rangers in the Scottish Cup in February 2011. The Parkhead club played with 10-men for much of the match but the South Koreans ability to dominate possession helped orchestrate a second half fightback.

He eventually left Celtic to join English Premier League side Swansea in 2012.
