The 10 areas in the North East worst hit by coronavirus - and the number of deaths confirmed

Thousands of people across the country have lost their lives to coronavirus.

Now new data has shown which areas in the UK have had the highest number of deaths involving Covid-19.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has created a map of the country which reveals the number of deaths that have occurred between March 1 and April 17 - registered by April 18.

The ONS has explained that coronavirus was the underlying cause or was mentioned on the death certificate as a contributory factor.

Here, we have put together a list of areas in the North East which have recorded the most deaths involving Covid-19 during that period..

The highest number of confirmed deaths are in places including Sunderland, County Durham, Newcastle and Gateshead.

1. Stanley South, County Durham - 18 deaths

2. Southwick, Sunderland - 16 deaths

3. Hetton-le-Hole North, Sunderland - 14 deaths

4. Fawdon South, Newcastle - 12 deaths

5. Hylton Red House and Marley Pots, Sunderland - 12 deaths

6. Birtley South, Gateshead - 10 deaths

7. Hill View and Tunstall, Sunderland - 10 deaths

8. South Hylton, Sunderland - 10 deaths

9. Westerhope, Newcastle - 10 deaths

10. Gateshead South - 9 deaths
