Thaworn three adrift as late eagle gives Kapur share of lead

New Delhi: Thailand's Thaworn Wiratchant hit a four-under-par 68 in the third round to stay in contention for the title at the Panasonic Open India yesterday.

The 50-year-old veteran was sixth on 206, three shots behind co-leaders Shiv Kapur (69) of India and Paul Peterson (70) from the US who were on 203.

Thaworn has won a record 18 Asian Tour titles and has been crowned money champion twice in 2005 and 2012.

He is confident that he can win his 19th title here.

"Everything depends on your first shot on the tee. If you hit it well, everything will go smoothly. But if you hit a poor one, you'll be in trouble," said Thaworn.

"One bad shot and you could be in trouble so you have to be very focused and careful. The Indians obviously have an advantage here as they get to play here more than us. But it also all comes down to your own self-belief. I've won at the Delhi Golf Club before so why can't I do it again."

Kapur showed great composure by ending his round with an eagle-three on the 18th hole to share the third round honours with overnight leader Peterson.

Having started the day with an opening bogey-six, it was a testing day for Kapur as he had to dig deep into his reserves to grind out a three-under-par 69 to remain on course for his first win on his home course at the Delhi Golf Club.

Peterson started his round impressively with an eagle but fell off the leaderboard momentarily after bogeys on holes two, four and nine. A birdie on 14 before a closing eagle on 18 lifted the American back to the top.
