Thatchers reassures cider fans that unwanted stock won't be poured away

Bristol’s favourite cidermakers Thatchers has said they 'don't foresee' being forced to pour away unused cider during the coronavirus crisis.

Breweries across Bristol and the South West have been hit hard by the pandemic and the countrywide closure of pubs its caused, with Bristol Beer Factory and Zerodegrees being among those to temporarily close.

Severn Brewery, in Tortworth near Bristol, even told the BBC that more than 2,000 gallons may have to be poured away and has since closed its doors for now too.

However, Thatchers, which employs around 200 people, has reassured cider fans across Bristol by insisting they are not facing a similar situation.

A spokesman for the cidermakers said: "Cider in kegs have a longer shelf life than real ale in casks so we don’t foresee an issue there.

"We are seeing an increase in online orders and home deliveries as people are not able to visit pubs and restaurants during these challenging times."

He went on to say the family business, which is behind brands including Thatchers Gold and Thatchers Haze, was helping the surrounding community in Somerset with shopping and collections.

"Our thoughts are with everyone who is experiencing a difficult time during this time," he continued.

"Here at Myrtle Farm we’re doing what we can by helping neighbours in our surrounding villages who are isolating at home with shopping and collections where needed."
