Thatchers isn't going to be at Glastonbury Festival's bars this year

In just three months time nearly 200,000 people will be having the time of their lives at Worthy Farm.

The return of Glastonbury Festival is just around the corner and the recent lineup announcement has ramped up the excitement levels a notch or two, with the likes of The Killers, The Cure and many more all set to descend on Pilton.

But the latest nugget of Glastonbury news to get the forums talking has nothing to do with the music. Instead, it's the departure of Thatchers at this year's spectacular which has sparked discussion.

Ever since 2014 the popular cider has been served at the numerous bars scattered across the site, but this year that will change. Punters will no longer be able to get their hands on an ice cold pint of Thatchers Haze. Gutting.

Martin Thatcher, who runs the cider company, said: "We’ve had a great time working with Glastonbury Festival over the past few years and we’ve become good friends with Michael and Emily Eavis.

"This year we won’t be there as the official cider to the festival, as partnerships like this do always change.

"We’ll be there in spirit though and if you’re lucky enough to have tickets, we wish everyone a fantastic time.

"Of course festival goers will be able to find supplies of Thatchers Gold and Haze, to enjoy while they’re there, in nearby supermarkets and of course throughout Bristol.

"Meanwhile we’ve got a really exciting spring and summer full of events ahead, especially here in the South West – including Valley Fest, Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and the Badminton Horse Trials, and we’ve also just announced our partnership with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which will have international matches at both Bristol and Taunton, so we look forward to serving our ciders to many, many people over the coming months.”

Mallets Cider to be at Worthy Farm

However, there is good news as its replacement is a company which certainly knows a thing or two about how to make decent cider.

Mallets Cider's HQ is based just down the road from the festival site in Shepton Mallet and falls under the Brothers umbrella, whose delicious beverages can also be found at the event.

Matthew Showering, managing director of Mallets, said: “We are honoured to return to Glastonbury once again with our ‘Cider for Gods’.

"We have been part of the festival for more than 20 years, having introduced Brothers cider to Glastonbury back in 1995, so the festival holds a special place in our hearts.

"We have worked extremely hard perfecting Mallets and this latest deal is testament to its quality; we can’t wait for the Glastonbury community to try it.”

'Really looking forward to working with them'

Festival founder Michael Eavis said: “We feel it’s very important to have a local producer of cider at the festival, showcasing some of the best cider Somerset has to offer.

"Mallets is produced just a stone’s throw from the festival and we’re really looking forward to working with them.

“It tastes great and I’m sure our cider drinkers will love it. It’s already going down very well in the village Working Men’s Club!”

Glastonbury Festival will take place between June 26 and 30 at Worthy Farm in Pilton.
