Thatched cottage in Co Tyrone offers unique Northern Ireland staycation

A unique thatched cottage in Co Tyrone which has been converted into a B&B with a bar and restaurant is proving a hit with tourists from all over the world.

Rosehill House on the outskirts of Stewartstown is an idyllic hideaway from the modern world, transporting you back in time to days gone by.

The property was first purchased by local man Martin Armour to actually live in, before he saw the potential of Rosehill as a place for people to come visit and stay in.

Then with the impact of the pandemic, Martin sought a license for an outdoor bar and restaurant area which has seen visitors come from all over.

Martin told MyTyrone: “The house is actually brand new, it’s only five years old. But if anybody comes to it it looks like it has been there for a hundred years.

“It was only ever actually built as a house, I lived in it at the start but then things changed.

“I do these group tours that come from the Titanic Quarter and other areas and would ring people from there.

“Everything in the house is original, it’s all the genuine article. And the house was even built with all the traditional means, so that’s why when I built it, it started to get attention.”

Martin said the guesthouse has proved particularly popular with large groups who book the whole house, including hen parties.

He has also recently added a cinema inside the property for another activities for those that stay there.

“These groups can book into the house, and I have a late license. We have a period bar and all in it as well.

“We have had people in from Belfast recently, from London and Germany and even a group from Sri Lanka stay with us as well.

“It’s actually built for a purpose, it’s not just that someone built a thatched house. I wanted it to look like a house built in the 1840s, and the house comes up through the time with Edwardian doors and then through to the electric from the 1930s.

“It’s made for having the fire lit and the turf and the smells of the geraniums, it’s made to inspire memories of days gone by really.”
