Kate McCann, the journalist, has said she is “fine now” after fainting while hosting a debate between Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak on Tuesday night.

The showdown between the two Tory leadership contenders was brought to a dramatic halt when she fainted off-camera while Ms Truss was speaking.

A loud crash, and the Foreign Secretary’s horrified look, were the signs that something had gone wrong during the debate, called The Sun’s Showdown: The Fight for Number 10.

“Well that wasn’t how last night was supposed to end,” Ms McCann said on Twitter.

“Thanks everyone for the lovely messages – I’m fine now – and apologies to @trussliz and @RishiSunak for cutting the debate short.”

She will be back on air on Wednesday evening and joked: “Yes, sat down.”

The TalkTV political editor was moderating the debate on her own after her scheduled co-host Harry Cole, The Sun’s political editor, tested positive for Covid.

The debate was just over halfway through when a loud crash interrupted Ms Truss who, holding her hands to her face, said: “Oh my God.” The debate was then quickly taken off air.

TalkTV apologised to viewers for not resuming the programme, saying in a statement: “Kate McCann fainted on air tonight and, although she is fine, the medical advice was that we shouldn’t continue with the debate.”

Mr Sunak and Ms Truss both tweeted to wish the journalist well shortly after the interruption.
