'That was a beautiful moment': Thousands cheer and clap to say special thank you to Bristol's NHS workers

At 8pm this evening (March 26) thousands of people across Bristol cheered, clapped and set off fireworks to say a special thank you to our NHS workers.

For weeks, nurses and doctors have been working round the clock putting their own lives at risk to save others during the coronavirus crisis.

To acknowledge their heroism, people stood at their front doors or hung out of windows, coming together from their own isolation for the unique moment.

It lasted only minutes but it's hoped the the show of solidarity will help all of those who are working on the frontline during these difficult times.

At Bristol's harbourside, horns were sounding, whistles were blowing and a chorus of clapping could be heard from the hundreds of flats dotted around the city centre.

Applause sounded from every corner of the city stretching from Hengrove all the way to St Werburghs and everywhere in between.

In Bath, lines of houses were transformed blue as the city celebrated their workers.

And even people in the countryside joined in, Glastonbury Festival Emily Eavis tweeted: "Wow, that was a beautiful moment. Even in the countryside, you could hear the cheers echoing across the valley."

Bristol North West MP Darren Jones tweeted: "Amazing effort right across the country. Well done everyone in our NHS."

And one resident revealed just how hard NHS employees are working.

She wrote on Twitter: "Most people in my block of flats work at Southmead Hospital. Our next door neighbour finished a 17-day stretch of work at Southmead yesterday. That was spectacular, BS10."
