'That said' - Ally McCoist makes Nathan Patterson claim after Everton transfer

Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes the club have received 'tremendous money' from Everton for Nathan Patterson.

The Toffees ' long search for a new right-back came to an end this week as they struck a deal with the Scottish champions for the 20-year-old.

Patterson has made impressive strides in his young career so far, shining in his outings for Rangers and appearing at ease with the weight of the national team jersey on his shoulders too.

Eyebrows have been raised at the deal in some quarters as the Scotland international was behind James Tavernier in the pecking order at Ibrox.

The ECHO understands the Toffees paid £11 million with add-ons to the Glasgow giants, with Patterson regarded as the long-term successor to club captain Seamus Coleman.

Given the fee and Patterson's struggle to oust Tavernier from the starting right-back berth, McCoist told TalkSport (h/t Football Scotland ) that the deal represented fine business for Rangers.

"I do like him, I think it is good business all round," said the former forward. "And I think it is tremendous money for someone that has only played 15, 16 games and effectively wasn’t in the team to tell the truth.

"[James] Tavernier was keeping him out of the team. That said, really exciting boy, great going forward, great to watch and I wish him all the very, very best."

McCoist is Rangers' all-time leading goalscorer and in his 15 seasons with the club he won the Scottish Premier League on an incredible 10 occasions.

Everton fans will no doubt be eager to see Patterson in action and the defender has been pictured in training ahead of the team's FA Cup third round clash with Hull City on Saturday.
