'That's what we all want' - Hexham MP hopes the Newcastle takeover can be resurrected

The Newcastle United fanbase has never been more united as the takeover saga continues to roll on.

The pressure on the Premier League is relentless with more than 100,000 signatures on a petition calling for an investigation into the takeover process, and more than 7,000 letters sent to MPs across the country from fans calling for answers over why the Saudi-backed bid had not been approved before they withdrew.

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also backed called for clarity from the Premier League as to why they took so long to look into deal and still failed to come to a conclusion.

Yet Richard Masters remains silent - some feel he may continue to do so, especially if the consortium led by Amanda Staveley is still around the table to buy the club.

And it is that notion, the one that the deal can be resurrected that has the backing of Hexham MP Guy Opperman.

Opperman, like 20 of the region's 29 MPs and a further nine from across the UK, has written a letter to the Premier League demanding answers.

While enjoying a pint with fellow Conservative Party member and North West Durham MP Richard Holden, Opperman spoke of hope that the deal could still be done.

"The bottom line is this - it has to be transparent," he said.

"If they can get the deal back on the table, that's what we all want.

"There is no doubt that there are a lot of constituents, whether they're in North West Durham, Hexham, across Northumberland, or from all across the North East who are really passionate about this, and the Premier League really need to start listening."

The letter initiative was set up by the Newcastle United Supporters Trust and during a meeting with members on Friday, a message from Staveley was read out thanking fans for their efforts and revealed that the consortium had been 'humbled' by the support.

The support from the region's MPs is unprecedented - especially given the cross-party consensus too, and the demand on the league for answers is only growing.

"It's really bothering people locally," Holden added.

"Now we've been discussing it and what we want to see really is some transparency from the Premier League about what they're doing.

"It's quite clear that they need to get on and come to a solution."
