Emma Thompson recently shared a shocking revelation about an unexpected phone call she received from US President Donald Trump on the same day her divorce from ex-husband Kenneth Branagh was finalized.
At the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, the British actress opened up about the call she received while on the set of the 1998 film Primary Colors. Thompson was in a trailer when her phone rang, and to her surprise, it was Donald Trump on the other end. Initially, she thought the call was a joke.
“I thought it was a joke and asked, ‘How can I help you?’ Maybe he needed directions from someone,” Thompson recalled. The 66-year-old actress continued, “Then he said: ‘I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.’”
Thompson shared that she politely responded, saying, “Well, that’s very sweet. Thank you so much. I’ll get back to you.”
During her conversation at the festival, Emma explained that at the time, Trump, who had recently separated from his second wife, Marla Maples, was apparently looking for someone “suitable” to date. “I realised that on that day, my divorce decree had come through. And I bet he’s got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm,” Thompson said to The Hollywood Reporter.
She added, “You know, a nice divorcée, that’s what he was looking for.” The actress then pointed out that Trump must have found her phone number from a directory on the film set. “And he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that’s stalking,” she said.
Despite the unusual nature of the call, Thompson joked about the missed opportunity, saying, “I could have gone on a date with Donald, and then I would have a story to tell. I could have changed the course of American history.”
Thompson’s candid recounting of the incident left the audience at the Swiss festival stunned and provided an unexpected glimpse into her past interactions with the president.
