'That's been coming' - Lee Johnson on how he got Bristol City firing against Huddersfield Town

Bristol City move up to fifth after hitting five goals for the first time in 18 months: the last time being 21 April, 2018, in a 5-5 draw with Hull.

Is this a significant sign of progress today that the Robins really mean business this season as the midfield talents of Niclas Eliasson, Josh Brownhill, Adam Nagy and Han-Noah Massengo enabled City to control this game better and launch attacks?

Following the game, head coach Lee Johnson gave his reaction the game and discussed star man Niclas Eliasson.

The Swedish winger made two goals, scored and was the most fouled player in the game.

"The boys were fantastic today," he said following the game.

"It’s been a tough week for us for a number of reasons and we wanted to come and show our spirit and I thought we showed both spirit in attack and defence, some wonderful moments of quality which is good and I felt that coming at home.

"After the Forest game we took a bit of criticism, we took it on the chin in terms of our finishing but we got in some great areas and you made the point about getting across people in the box, Gregor made the point about no shots on target but I think we created four or five golden opportunities and that should be enough to win a game so I think it was coming.

"Credit to the boys because I think today we really executed the things we’ve been working on in training," he added.

Of the outstanding Eliasson, Johnson explained just why the wide man is blossoming this season - thanks in part to learning some martial arts in his spare time (that Johnson himself used to do as a young player too).

The 23-year-old now has seven Championship assists for the season and only West Brom's Matheus Pereira can match that.

"Wingers hit their peak at about 27, 28 because by that point, they’ve learned everything," said Johnson.

"When he came in as a young player, without doubt with talent but a little bit short in terms of the defensive side of the game, physically in the duels sometimes a little bit short and again, credit to him, he’s a fantastic student, look at the way his body has changed, look at the way he understands and see’s situations developing, when to press, when not to press...

"We’ve sent him to judo every week for a year and he’s taken that on and now you can see him using his body much better, particularly in and around his feet.

"So now he’s not only got the skill to go past somebody but he’s got the strength to disrupt them and when you’ve got strength and skill together and centre of gravity, it’s very difficult to stop," added Johnson.

The Robins roll on to face Fulham next weekend.
