'That's a hell of a job' - Passerby snaps hair-raising photo as workers scale Edinburgh's Balmoral Clock

Waking up today you probably had that Monday lethargy, still recovering from Friday night with the remnants of a hangover.

But at least your first task of the day wasn't 190 feet off the ground, dangling from the Balmoral Clock before you've even had a chance to grab a coffee.

A passerby posted the photo of the workers as they scaled the tower on Reddit this morning, captioned "that's a hell of a job" - and we couldn't agree more.

Completed in 1902, the clock has dominated Edinburgh's skyline for over 100 years and almost never tells the right time - with the exception of December 31, in the countdown to New Year.

One said 'that's one job where if you make a mistake you don't get a second chance' (u/cheesyla/ Reddit)

This was not a mere accident, the iconic clock was intentionally set three minutes fast in a bid to ensure passengers wouldn't miss their trains - a policy that remains in place today.

The original clock was designed by luxury Edinburgh-based jewelers Hamilton & Inches and became digital in the seventies.

It has only stopped twice since then and a spokesperson for The Balmoral assured us that this was just a "routine inspection" that will be underway over the next two weeks.

We hope someone got them a coffee afterwards to keep them ticking over for the rest of the day after this hair-raising moment...
