After the recent passing of former Vice President Dick Cheney, many of his media interactions from the past few years have started to go viral. Among these, a particularly notable video has gained significant traction on social media, featuring him expressing his disdain for the current President of the United States, Donald Trump.
In the video, Dick Cheney criticises Donald Trump, calling him the greatest threat to the United States republic in its “246-year history.” He also labels him a coward and accuses him of attempting to “steal” the previous elections (referring to the 2020 elections he lost to Joe Biden), using “lies” and “violence” to maintain his power after the voters had rejected him (in reference to his hate-inciting actions that led to the 2021 January 6 Capitol attacks).
After hearing Dick Cheney’s harsh criticism of Donald Trump, many have pointed out that it must carry weight coming from someone like him, a person who has largely been a conservative Republican all his life. One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented on one of these videos:
“When Dick Cheney — the architect of Iraq and the Patriot Act — calls you the biggest threat to America, that’s not irony.”
Another individual made a similar comment:
“When the man who destabilized half the Middle East calls you a threat to democracy, you’ve officially reached endgame levels of American politics.”
Many others echoed these sentiments, showing their support for Dick Cheney’s comments. Since taking office as President of the United States this year, Donald Trump has made a series of poor choices that have resulted in widespread discontent among Americans. From the crackdown on immigrants to tariffs, the government shutdown, and now the cuts to SNAP benefits, the current president has been throwing one curveball after another at the American people. On top of all of this, there is also the ongoing xenophobia, queerphobia, racism, and misogyny that have become synonymous with this administration.
