'That is where Newcastle are' - Paul Merson can't understand Steve Bruce criticism after Wolves draw

Paul Merson believes Newcastle picked up a 'great point' at Wolves and reckons Steve Bruce deserves credit for showing his experience in his approach to the match.

Jacob Murphy's late free-kick rescued a point for the Magpies last Sunday after Raul Jimenez had opened the scoring for the hosts with 10 minutes remaining.

On the face of it, it was a solid point away from home against a side who have finished in seventh place in the Premier League in the last two successive seasons.

But Newcastle were criticised in some quarters for their negative approach and ex-Newcastle midfielder Kieron Dyer said he was 'bored' watching his former side.

Ahead of tomorrow's visit of Premier League leaders Everton, the Soccer Saturday pundits were discussing criticism of United's style of play under Bruce.

While former England international defender Glen Johnson agreed with Dyer's assertion, Sue Smith and Paul Merson felt Bruce should be getting credit as opposed to criticism.

Here's a full transcript of their chat about Newcastle.

Glen Johnson: "I see where Kieron is coming from.

"I am not a Newcastle fan or a part of their club but because the players are so hit and miss, and they threaten so much while sometimes they don't deliver, I could see the frustration.

"I was brought up with Newcastle being in and around the top of the table, being a fantastic side and being in the Champions League. It has been a long time since then.

"I think the fans feel frustration because they are a massive club and should be in and around the top of the table."

Sue Smith: "I thought Newcastle, whether it's not the free-flowing football Newcastle fans want to see, were actually very good, very well organised defensively and grabbed a point against Wolves which I think Steve Bruce will be more than happy with."

Paul Merson: "I am with Sue, it was a good point in the end.

"This is where Newcastle are. They aren't going to to go to Wolves and open the game up. Steve Bruce knows he hasn't got that quality of player.

"They have got to pick games where they can get results in and that is where Steve Bruce has all the experience in the world. They can go to Wolves, make it hard for them and they can nick a point.

"That comes with experience. A young coach may think they can go everywhere and play and entertain and hope the fans don't think he is a negative manager. That was a great point."
