'That is not Newcastle United' - Graeme Souness takes aim at Steve Bruce's tactics

Former Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness believes the tactics Steve Bruce is implying aren't following the tradition of the club.

Bruce, who took over at St Jame's Park in the summer, has endured an in different start to life as Newcastle boss, with a hard-fought victory over Tottenham their only win in the Premier League this season.

And Souness, speaking ahead of United's game against Leicester, believes the club's supporters want to be on the edge of their seats, not watching the counter-attacking style Bruce has so far deployed.

"If you look at Newcastle last week playing against Brighton, it was a team, for me anyway on television, trying to play counter-attacking football," the Scot told Sky Sports.

"But then they end up conceding 70 percent of the possession at home to Brighton.

"That is not Newcastle United. The supporters up there, they want you on the front foot. They want to be on the edge of their seats and they are screaming to get behind the team and they want to get behind the team, but if they are playing counter-attacking football against one of the lesser teams then you are just heaping it on yourself.

"Against the better teams you can understand it. The previous manager did time and time again at home, you know we will be solid give nothing away and try and nick a goal.

"But you can't be doing that against Brighton, you have got to take them on head-to-head. And it didn't work for them, that is why they ended up with 30 percent possession."
