Shashi Tharoor calls for permanent leadership in Congress

Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor called for a “permanent president” to head the Congress party (Source: The Hindu)

Congress leader and Thrivananthapuram MP Sashi Tharoor has said the Congress needed permanent leadership at the national level. If Rahul Gandhi desired to make a comeback as president, he should not delay it any further, he added.

Mr. Tharoor was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the office of Mathew Kuzhalnadan, MLA, at Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam on September 18.

Mr. Tharoor said nobody in the Congress would venture to speak against the immense contribution of Sonia Gandhi to the party.

Stating that she had led the party well, Mr. Tharoor said Ms. Gandhi's leadership was well-liked and respected. However her presidentship was currently an interim arrangement, the Congress leader said, adding that the party needed a permanent president at the national level to revitalise the party. Congress needed to be energised and reinvigorated, he added.
