'Thanks for the support folks': Pro-indy radio station shuts down after six years

PRO-INDEPENDENCE radio station Caledon Radio has announced it will stop broadcasting after six years on the air, citing "financial issues".

The internet station began broadcasting at the end of 2019 after Norrie Hunter – who used to work for the BBC – became frustrated with the biased and negative output of mainstream media when it came to Scottish news.

The station – which broadcasted from Hunter’s home in Hamilton – had become well-known for promoting Scottish music and having a variety of foreign guests on, both of which helped Caledon build a following at home and abroad in the likes of Canada, Italy and Ireland.

Announcing the stations closure, Hunter wrote: "Well it is with real sadness and disappointment that Caledon Radio is to stop broadcasting. Financial issues mean it is unsustainable.

"Thank you to all the wonderful guests you made the content 'superb'. Thanks for the support folks."

Fellow independence radio station Indy Live Radio wrote: "Sorry to hear that Norrie, we could offer you a platform for your political content if you wish."

Independence Live also responded: "Really sorry to hear this Norrie".

Hunter was invited to Canada in 2022 by the diaspora, who wanted to hear more about the station and Scotland.

At the time, Hunter said: . We were invited over by the Scots Society to give speeches about Scotland and they took us to their hearts. We also work closely with Celtic Connections and the music industry and we get four or five albums per week from Scottish bands that we play out and we get the band on for a chat.

"We’ve found culture leads politics. People will listen to other content because they find the music is good.”
