Thank you Mansfield: Police praise residents for staying indoors

One of Nottinghamshire Police's most senior officers has thanked Mansfield residents after a walkabout in the town centre showed people were staying indoors during the pandemic.

Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Barber patrolled the town centre with officers as part of the new Operation Bion patrols.

The new operation aims to engage, explain and encourage people to stay at home during the pandemic - to not only save their own lives, but also other lives and to reduce the impact Covid-19 has on the NHS. .

Police say patrols are also there to encourage people who need to be out to stick to social distancing rules, "protecting themselves and others from contracting the deadly coronavirus".

The Deputy Chief Constable said: “People are rising to the challenge and that is great to see.

"I have been on a number of these patrols now with front line officers and the messaging is clearly working.

“We chatted to people from a safe distance who were happy to say hello and were generally being compliant with the instructions and observing the social distancing measures.

“There were no major issues and I think the feedback we received from members of the public was really positive.

“It’s great to see how our staff are rising to the challenge of the coronavirus crisis and the concerted effort being made by our whole policing family and the public to tackle Covid-19.”
