A woman returned from vacation to find a disturbing situation at her house. The lights were on and someone was home. That someone was a squatter, she says.
On June 11, Sonia (@grandmasonia5) posted a TikTok showing the scene she says she found when she got home.
“I come home from vacation and notice my screen is off, window open,” she says, showing the window.
She goes to the front door, which is ajar. Inside, there’s soapy water in the sink and the television is on.
“I can tell somebody’s been in the house,” she says, adding, “Thank god my cat’s still here.”
Sonia walks into the bathroom, saying that she can tell it’s “been used.”
Then she says she heard something: The television was on in her bedroom.
“I go in here and there’s a homeless guy, just took over my house,” Sonia says incredulously. She opened the door and a man was lying on her bed watching TV.
She claims that she called the cops, but they “won’t do [expletive]” because the man lied and told them he is her tenant.
“I have to go to court to kick him out. Are you [expletive] kidding me? I never seen this guy in my life,” she says. “So now I gotta go to court to get a [expletive] stranger out of my house?”
‘Something is not right’
Sonia’s TikTok has 793,000 views and thousands of comments.
Many people were stunned that the police didn’t do anything in that situation.
“How the hell is that not breaking an entering? It’s like we live in the twilight zone anymore. God help us all,” wrote one.
Others made suggestions of varying legality to get the man out. These included calling her “local biker club.” One person ominously wrote, “Oh pew pew I was afraid for my life.”
A few people found her story a bit incredulous. One said she seemed pretty “calm” to have found a squatter in her home. Others suggested that the man is her current or former significant other.
“Something is not right with this story,” wrote one.
Sonia didn’t respond to questions sent via TikTok direct message on Wednesday morning.
The rest of the story
Nearly a month later, in early July, Sonia posted an update.
“All right there he is, the squatter and his dog,” she says, pointing at an unkempt man walking a small dog. “Finally caught him out of the house and he ain’t getting back in.”
She says that she called the police and is waiting for them to arrive.
It’s unclear if she had been to court at that point.
After a few seconds, the man slowly approaches her where she stands outside the house.
“You need to wait outside for the cops,” she says to him.
He responds, “Why?”
“What do you mean why? You’re a big fat squatter,” Sonia replies. “Don’t go in my house.”
Then the man asks her for money. “You got a couple bucks?” he says.
“Are you kidding me?” she responds as the video ends.
Once again, people were in turn appalled at the thought of someone getting away with squatting in someone else’s home, and a bit dubious.
Multiple people said the police would have acted unless the man had proof of residency, such as mail in his name. A few suggested that the two are or were in a relationship.
Some commenters pushed back on the doubters. “Laws don’t matter to a lot of cops,” wrote one. “They don’t do anything and it gets forced to civil instead of criminal [court].”
A common consensus is that people want to know how the story ends.
“Tag me in the ending please im invested,” one woman wrote.
Another agreed, “Oh my God so, how did this end? Are you OK? I’m way invested.”
