Thane: Trio loots bankers in filmy style, arrested

THANE: Three men who targeted two bank employees in broad daylight on a crowded Bhiwandi street last month and robbed them of Rs 12 lakhs cash in true filmy style, were finally tracked and arrested from Uttar Pradesh by the Bhiwandi police, officials informed on Saturday.

The police said the accused, apparently influenced by crime series, meticulously hatched their plan to hoodwink the police by wearing a food delivery app uniform as it would avoid suspicion while zooming off on bikes after the crime. However, their dress code instead helped the police, which was scanning CCTV footage of the area, track them down leading to their arrest.

According to the police, the incident was reported last month end when the cashier and security guard of a local cooperative bank branch were on their way to another bank located in the vicinity to deposit the money. The mastermind, a native of Uttar Pradesh who works as a migrant labour in Bhiwandi got wind of this daily schedule of physical transfer of currency on a bike, following which he hatched the plan with his two aides to loot the money during transit, the police said.

“The trio did a recce of the route which the bankers used daily and on the day of action, the two aides trailed the bankers on their bike while the mastermind who was near the bank was in touch with them. The aides intercepted the bankers and snatched the money bag and fled. The duo had dressed up as food delivery boys with helmets to avoid suspicion and identification which instead helped us track their movement on CCTVs installed along the route,” informed Kishore Khairnar, assistant commissioner of police.

“The two accused were in touch with the mastermind using data calls to avoid getting intercepted. We followed the CCTV footage that led us to a tailor in Kalyan who they met before escaping to UP following which a special team left for the state and brought them to Bhiwandi. The duo later led us to the master mind following which the three were arrested. We managed to recover nearly Rs 8 lakhs from them. The trio has been remanded to police custody and we will investigate the case further,” said the police.
