THANE: A 63-year-old man was duped of Rs 50,000 by a person who called up and told him that his power bill had been paid.
The resident of Samta Nagar had received a text message from an unidentified number in June stating that he had not paid his power bill and asked him to do so failing which the power connection at his house would be disconnected.
The resident called up on the number and the man told him to pay Rs 10 so the payment status of the bill could be updated. For this, the con man sent him a link and told him to pay Rs 10 . The elderly man did as he was told and after some time, he received a message that Rs 50,000 had been debited to his account. The man has lodged a complaint at Vartak Nagar police station. The police said that power companies have issued advisories not to fall for such SMS scams.
