Thammasat, inequality and 'colourism'

Passers-by walk past a billboard with mugshots of last year's cheerleaders from Thammasat University at its Rangsit campus. PATTARAPONG CHATPATTARASILL

As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For some, the controversial billboards with heads and bare shoulders of ex-Thammasat University cheerleaders are gorgeous, but for many, it's downright decadent for an education institute that has been formative in Thailand's political history.

The billboards, which were designed to attract new faces to the university's cheerleader team, also attracted condemnation from big-name critics such as Prof Seri Wongmontha. We have to admit that the adverts may not reflect the university's political history, or its historical image. But, times change.

The strong sense of disappointment by some members of the Thammasat community amazes me. Are we Thammasatians not supposed to be open minded and practise tolerance?
