Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has vowed to fight for democracy and urged his supporters not to give up.
The former prime minister, together with his sister former PM Yingluck, was reportedly in Hong Kong on a business trip on Thursday, according to Peace TV. They met a number of supporters at a hotel there where their fans held a belated birthday celebration for him.
“I always tell everyone if we don’t give up...if we keep fighting, we won’t lose. We lose only when we die or when we give up,” Thaksin told the group.
“We’re fighting battles now, not a war. A war ends when everything stops. All rounds of fighting now are simply battles but the war’s here to stay. And the important one is the war for democracy.
“I’m 69, yet Thailand still has no democracy. What we want is for the country to prosper. More importantly, we want to see Thais regain dignity...We once were a democracy, where everyone had dignity, rights and freedom. Now we’re ruled by someone at gunpoint. We find this unacceptable. The election day will be the judgement day,” he said.
