Thailand’s current King has hit out at the idea of his sister running for Prime Minister labelling it as “extremely inappropriate”.

King Vajiralongkorn said his sister’s decision to run “conflicted” with the country’s traditions.

Princess Ubolratana Mahidol, 67, has been nominated as a candidate by the Thai Raska Chart Party.

The party is allied with a divisive former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra.

If she was selected to lead the government after the March 24 general election, it would pit her against the preferred candidate of the military, which is considered one of Thailand's most royalist institutions.

In a palace statement read out on all Thai TV networks, the king said: "Involvement of a high-ranking member of the royal family in politics, in whatever way, is an act that conflicts with the country's traditions, customs, and culture, and therefore is considered extremely inappropriate."
