Thailand coach Hudson eyes shocks in group of doom

Thailand coach Anthony Hudson

Thailand head coach Anthony Hudson admitted his team face a tough challenge after the draw for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup placed them in Group F with four-time champions Japan, title-holder Qatar and Indonesia.

"Before the draw, everyone hoped that we [Thailand] would be drawn in an easy group so we could have a better chance to reach the later stages of the tournament. But we've got very strong opponents, especially Qatar, the team I know personally well, and many people know how strong Japan are," said Hudson as Thailand gear up for two friendly matches against Kuwait and China during the Fifa international window.

"But I think anything can happen in the world of football. The most important thing is that if they want to perform well, they must start preparing the right way beginning from this camp," added the Englishman.

Meanwhile, Muang Thong United midfielder Kakana Khamyok expressed his delight after being called up for the first time by Hudson.

"I feel happy every time I get a call-up for the national team. In this camp I have a chance to meet senior players and many new faces that I admire," he said.

"This is my first time working with coach Hudson and I will try to learn the tactics from the coach."

Thailand will play Kuwait at Pathum Thani Stadium on Friday before travelling to China for a second warm-up match on June 9 at Jinhua Sports Center Stadium and Kakana relished the challenge against "strong" opponents.

"Both Kuwait and China are strong and I think it is good to face strong teams. I would love to have a chance to play in both games and it will be a challenge for me. Hopefully, the fans will come and cheer the team on June 5 when we play Kuwait," he added.

The fixtures form part of Hudson's build-up to the next phase of World Cup qualifying later this year.
