Thailand bay made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach to close until 2021

A Thailand beach made famous for its appearance in a Hollywood movie is to remain closed for another two years.

Maya Bay, on the island of Phi Phi Leh, was temporarily closed last year after visitors severely damaged the environment.

Before it closed, up to 5,000 people were visiting the bay every day but this caused most of its coral to die.

Now, a ban on visitors has been extended until 2021 to give more time for Maya Bay's ecology to recover.

The bay appeared in the 2000 film The Beach, which was directed by Danny Boyle and featured Leonardo DiCaprio.

Songtam Suksawang, director of Thailand's National Parks Department, told CNN Travel: "We will review again then if it is ready to open to tourists.

"We need more time to allow nature to fully recover. Our team will reassess the situation every three months."

Jean-Luc Solandt, principal specialist of Marine Protected Areas, told The Independent: "Tourists are both ignorant of the damage they can cause by touching corals, and grabbing them, and also tend to be more clumsy than experienced divers."

He added: "It has been proven that the products from sun cream can slough off your body and kill corals."
