SAPPORO, Japan: After 44 hours labouring outside in sub-zero temperatures, the Thai team of snow sculptors has taken the top prize once again at the Sapporo Snow Festival.

Their winning "Betta Brilliance - The Beauty and Strength of Thailand" sculpture depicts a group of graceful Siamese fighting fish.

In the two decades that Thailand has participated in the contest, the Thai team sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand has now won eight times, more than any other participating country.

Nine teams from eight countries took part in the 46th International Show Sculpture Contest this year. The other countries were Finland, Poland, Singapore, Indonesia, Hawaii, Daejeon from South Korea, and teams representing Macau and China.

“We have done our best and are happy with the result,” said Kusol Bunkobsongserm, leader of the Thai snow sculptors, who also included Amnoaysak Srisuk and Kitsana Wongtes.

“But after all, what matters most is friendship, not winning,” added Kusol, beaming.

The runner-up was the team from Macau with "Goddess of Kun Lam", showing the symbol of kindness and harmony. It is a popular attraction for visitors to Macau.

"The participants and the public have enjoyed positive cultural exchanges and have developed new friendships," the organisers said on the website.

The contest is part of the annual Sapporo Snow Festival that continues until Monday.
