
New words and verbal expressions are born every day yet our classic proverbs remain unchanged with references that are dated or we can no longer relate to. I’ll say it’s time to give classic proverbs a makeover with contemporary references. Some meanings are changed, by the way. Shall we give this a try?
CLASSIC VERSION
Pound chilli paste and pour it in the river.
ORIGINAL VERSION
A big effort that yields very little to no result.
UPDATED VERSION
Shoot water upwards to reduce PM2.5 particles.
While the water rises, fill up your buckets (in preparation for drought).
When it’s the right time to do something, make the most of it.
While the coup lasts, buy Chinese tanks and submarines.
One rotten apple spoils the barrel.
It takes one bad example to tarnish the reputation of an entire group.
One ignorant person makes the entire country look stupid.
Ignorance is bliss.
You don’t worry about that which you don’t know of.
Historical and cultural ignorance is Thai education.
The early bird catches the worm.
It’s best to be early for things. If you wake up early, you’ll get a lot of things done throughout the day. If you queue at Taco Bell early, you’ll be served first and so on. You get the picture.
