Thai pop singer apologises for wearing swastika shirt on stage two days before Holocaust Memorial Day

A singer in a Thai pop group has apologised after wearing a shirt with a swastika on it during a performance just two days before Holocaust Memorial Day.

The controversy involved the girl group BNK48 and Israel's embassy in Thailand posted a statement on Twitter expressing "shock and dismay over the Nazi outfit worn by the singer".

It added: "Presenting Nazi symbols by the band's singer hurt the feelings of millions around the world whose relatives were murdered by the Nazis.”

The performer, 19-year-old Pichayapa "Namsai" Natha, made a tearful apology as she begged for forgiveness from fans, in a video apology.

This was made on the stage where the group usually performs and she dropped to her knees as she finished her brief statement, before being comforted by fellow band members.

She blamed her own ignorance for the situation.

She also wrote on Instagram: "I really want to apologise for this situation. Everything that I did it, it's all my mistake."

The singer promised such an incident would "never happen again",

Management of the group also apologised that they had "inadvertently caused dismay and distress".

Sunday is International Holocaust Remembrance day.

It is marked with sombre ceremonies worldwide to remember the six million Jews and others killed in Adolf Hitler's notorious death camps.
