Thai Masters first big test for local stars

Thai shuttlers begin their 2019 season at the BWF Princess Sirivannavari Thailand Masters at Indoor Stadium Hua Mark this week.

The BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament offers a total prize money of US$150,000 (approximately 4.9 million baht).

Thailand had their most successful campaign at the tournament last year when they won three titles.

Nitchaon Jindapol, Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai and Tinn Isriyanet/Kittisak Namdash claimed the women's singles, women's doubles and men's doubles honours respectively at Bangkok's Nimibutr Stadium.

Defending champion Nitchaon, who is the top seed again this year, will face a qualifier in the first round of the women's singles competition.

Eighth seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan will play Israel's Russian-born Ksenia Polikarpova in the first round. The 22-year-old Thai, who won the title in 2017, pulled out of last year's tournament due to an ankle injury.

Thai players have dominated the women's singles event for the past three years, with Ratchanok Intanon also winning the title at the inaugural tournament in 2016.

Jongkolphan and Rawinda, the top seeds in the women's doubles event, will play Agatha Imanuela and Siti Ramadhanti of Indonesia in the first round.

Tinn, meanwhile, will partner Nipitphon Phuangphuapet as he is bidding to win the men's doubles crown for the second year in a row. They will play qualifiers in the opening round.

Kittinupong Kedren and Dechapol Puavaranukroh will have a tough assignment after being drawn against top seeds Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong of Malaysia in the first round.

Khosit Phetpradab is seeded second in the men's singles event and will face China's Zhao Junpeng in the first round, while third seed Kantaphon Wangcharoen will play fellow Thai Sitthikom Thammasan in the opener.

In the mixed doubles event, second seeds Dechapol and Sapsiree Taerattanchai will play qualifiers.

World No.5 Ratchanok will again skip this year's event and begin her campaign at the $350,000 Malaysia Masters -- a BWF World Tour Super 500 event -- which will be held in Kuala Lumpur from Jan 15-20.
