Thai king's royal consort stripped of title over 'disrespectful behaviour'

The royal consort to Thailand's king has been stripped of her title due to issues over her behaviour, according to a palace statement.

Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi, 34, was one of the first people to receive the title of Royal Noble Consort in almost a century when she was appointed in July.

But a statement on Monday said she had tried to make herself equivalent to the queen and also defied the royal couple.

The statement also described Sineenat as "ungrateful".

"Royal Noble Consort Sineenat is ungrateful and behaves in ways unbecoming of her title. She is also not content with the title bestowed upon her, doing everything to rise to the level of the queen," the statement said.

"She lacks the understanding of the good traditions of the royal court. She displays disobedience against the king and the queen."

The statement added she had breached a code of conduct for courtiers.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who was officially crowned in a ceremony in May, appointed her to the position shortly after his marriage to the deputy head of his personal bodyguard unit, Suthida Tidjai.
