Thai giants massacred in Saitama

Thai League 1 champions Buriram United's listless start to the year continued on Thursday when they were hammered 3-0 by Japanese Emperor Cup winners Urawa Red Diamonds in the AFC Champions League.

In yesterday's other Group G game, South Korea's Jeonbuk defeated Beijing Guoan of China 3-1.

Buriram have to yet to win a game in the Thai top flight after drawing their first two games of the season.

Urawa were also in search of a morale-boosting win following their 2-0 loss to Consadole Sapporo in J1-League at the weekend.

The hosts had their wish at Saitama stadium where the Japanese club turned on the heat in the second half.

Five minutes into the second half, Urawa were first on the scoreboard when Tomoaki Makino headed in a cross from captain Yosuke Kashiwagi.

There was no looking back for 2017 ACL champions Urawa, who were boosted by an ensuing brace by Daiki Hashioka.

Hashioka picked up his first on 75 minutes when he pounced on a clearance by Buriram goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen.

An 88th-minute cross from substitute Koya Yuruki found Hashioka in the right spot to complete the rout.

The Thunder Castle next host Jeonbuk on March 13.
